The first assignment in 1992, required the construction of a piece of scenery to be usedin a theatrical play. The next challenge involved the creation of a floating device that would sail along a water-tank installed at the School of Architecture’s atrium. While, the design of a diving board called for the whole action to take place outside the School’s boundaries; the beach of Leonidion in the Peloponnese was chosen for the assembly of the structures.
The fourth assignment was highly experimental in nature, as it required designing a beam that would both bridge an opening of 4.5 meters and be capable of supporting a given load; it was followed by the construction of a foot bridge. The series of assignments finally concluded in 2000 with yet another innovative assignment that involved the challenge of creating a device that would elevate 50 kg off the ground floor of the School’s atrium to the upper gallery of the School of Architecture.
The inventiveness of the proposed constructions, the imaginative solutions, the students’ eagerness and the invigoratingcompetition between the student groups, excelled every expectation and sealed in the best possible way the cycle of thisacademic experiment.
The photographic archives from the School of Architecture served as the primary source of material for this exhibition, which intends to highlight the avant-garde academic approach of the School of Architecture, as it was expressed through this academic experiment 25 years ago.
